Preventative Maintenance for a Worry-Free Winter

The vacations are over, the kids are back in school and cooler evenings have begun. Take advantage of the lull to prepare your vehicle for the winter ahead. Breakdowns, never convenient, can be dangerous in cold weather period. Here are some tips to get your vehicle ready for the fall and winter season.

First things first

Read your owner’s manual and follow the manufacturer’s recommended service schedules. There are usually two schedules listed: normal and severe.

Engine Performance

Have engine driveability problems (hard starts, rough idling, stalling, diminished power, etc.) corrected at a good repair shop. Cold weather will make existing problems worse. Replace dirty filtersair, fuel, PCV, etc.

Fuel

Put a bottle of fuel de-icer in your tank once a month to help keep moisture from freezing in the fuel line. Note, too, that a gas tank that’s kept filled helps prevent moisture from forming in the first place.

Oil

Change your oil and oil filter as specified in your manual more often (every 3,000 miles or so) if your driving is mostly stop-and-go or consists of frequent short trips.

Cooling System

The cooling system should be flushed and refilled as recommended. The level, condition, and concentration of the coolant should be checked periodically. (A 50/50 mix of anti-freeze and water is usually recommended.) If you’re doing your own work, allow the radiator to cool down completely before removing the cap. (Newer vehicles have coolant reservoirs.) The tightness and condition of drive belts, clamps, and hoses should be checked by a certified auto technician.

Heater/Defroster

The heater and defroster must be in good working condition for passenger comfort and driver visibility.

Windshield Wipers

Replace old blades. If your climate is harsh, purchase rubber-clad (winter) blades to fight ice build-up. Stock up on windshield washer solvent you’ll be surprised how much you use. Carry an ice-scraper.

Battery

The only accurate way to detect a weak battery is with professional equipment. But do-it-yourselfers can do routine maintenance. Scrape away corrosion from posts and cable connections; clean all surfaces; re-tighten all connections. If battery caps are removable, check fluid level monthly.

A word of caution:

Be sure to avoid contact with corrosive deposits and battery acid. Wear eye protection and rubber gloves. Note too that removal of cables can cause damage or loss of data/codes on some newer vehicles so refer to your manual for instructions.

Lights

Inspect all lights and bulbs; replace burned out bulbs; periodically clean road grime from all lenses with a moistened cloth or towel. To prevent scratching, never use a dry rag.

Exhaust System

Your vehicle should be placed on a lift and the exhaust system examined for leaks. The trunk and floorboards should be inspected for small holes. Exhaust fumes can be deadly.

Tires

Worn tires will be of little use in winter weather. Examine tires for remaining tread life, uneven wearing, and cupping; check the sidewalls for cuts and nicks. Check tire pressure once a month. Let the tires “cool down” before checking the pressure. Rotate as recommended. Don’t forget your spare, and be sure the jack is in good condition.

Emergencies

Carry gloves, boots, blankets, flares, a small shovel, sand or kitty litter, tire chains, a flashlight, and a cell phone. Put a few “high-energy” snacks in your glove box.

Premium Motorsports Tabs D.J. Kennington for Daytona International Speedway

Canadian D.J. Kennington is going south of the border again to drive in the the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series. But this time, it’ll be with a different team after attempting the first two restrictor plate events with Gaunt Brothers Racing.

Next month, he’ll run the No. 15 for Premium Motorsports at Daytona International Speedway. Kennington made the announcement on his Twitter page along with an image of the car, which will be sponsored by Xchange of America and Lordco Auto Parts.

Earlier in the season, Kennington raced his way into the Daytona 500 for Gaunt Bros. He finished 36th with their No. 96 Toyota after getting involved in a mid-race wreck. The two-time NASCAR Pinty’s Series champion then failed to qualify at Talladega Superspeedway with the team.

For the July Daytona event, Kennington will replace Reed Sorenson at Premium. This No. 15 team is the one he made his Cup debut with at Phoenix International Raceway in the fall of 2016.

The deal was announced as a one-race effort. Sorenson remains Premium’s primary driver and no information was released as to whether the Gaunt Bros. will still attempt Daytona.

Kennington, by virtue of Premium’s charter is now guaranteed a spot in Daytona’s starting lineup.

CANADIAN RACER DJ KENNINGTON QUALIFIES FOR THE DAYTONA 500

MAPLE RIDGE, BC – On Sunday February 26, 2017 Canadian racer DJ Kennington will line up for the ‘Great American Race’ at the Daytona 500 in Florida. The Daytona 500 is regarded as the most important and prestigious race on the NASCAR calendar, carrying by far the largest purse. This past week Kennington broke through two qualifying rounds to gain access to this event.  It’s been since 1988 that a Canadian has gripped hands on the steering wheel amongst North America’s finest to complete in the Super Bowl of stock car racing. If there’s something for Canada to be proud of right now, it’s the effort and determination that Kennington has brought to the race.

Kennington is from St. Thomas, Ontario is a two-time NASCAR Pinty’s Series champion and 19-time Pinty’s Series race winner. He has made 56 career starts in the NASCAR’s three national divisions, including his Cup Series debut last fall at the Phoenix International Speedway. Since the age of four he’s watched the Daytona 500 and has never missed one.  This is his 24th year of racing.

Gaunt Brothers Racing has put together a 2018 Toyota Camry for Kennington to take on the world’s biggest stock car race. “It’s a dream come true to have the opportunity to race in the Daytona 500. Years of hard work and a lot of people helping along the way has made this possible.” Says Kennington. “So far my experience with Gaunt Brothers Racing has been nothing but amazing, a great group of people and a professional race team has given me the support to get this far.”

“There was one time that looked like (Kennington) was going to lose the draft. Robby [Benton, Kennington’s spotter] talked him through splitting the wake to get back through there. D.J. came on and said, ‘Wow, I’m learning a lot. I’m going to school.’ Then he came back through and caught the tail end of the draft. He’s been watching tapes, Robby’s been talking to him about what we need to see. D.J. did everything he needed to do to make the 500.” says Marty Gaunt, team owner of Gaunt Brothers Racing.

British Columbia based auto parts distributor Lordco Parts Ltd. and Castrol (Wakefield Canada) have teamed up to sponsor Kennington’s race to the finish. “How exciting it is to have a car in the race, especially one that sports a Canadian maple leaf on the side”, says Lordco CEO Doug Coates. “Lordco’s late owner Ed Coates would be no doubt proud of this moment. To see the Lordco brand race along the best of the best with Kennington behind the wheel, it just doesn’t get any better than that.” It’s known to all Lordco staff and those tied into the company that this was Ed’s favorite racing event and had attended it since 1988 before his passing in 2014.

There will be a lot more noise from America’s neighbour this Sunday as Canadians cheer Kennington in the Daytona 500.
